Home Labbing
I've been working in IT for more than 20 years. I joined the USAF in 2002 and was trained as a computer programmer. I learned to build computers at the first office I was assigned to. I started programming in Mirosoft Visual Basic v6. Along the way I've learned HTML/XML, CSS, Javascript/JSON, PHP, Perl, C++, C#, Python, SQL, Bash, and several others. Including several technologies and frameworks.
A couple years ago, a friend told me about Docker. I was like, "what?" And eventually, I looked into it. I had run various virtual machines on my system so has to maintain separation in development and production environment. Docker is the next level of virtual machine techologies like Virtual Box and VMWare. It is super lightweight and much easier to update and deploy the next version of various software!
Eventually, I discovered the world of home labs and self-hosting! I knew people installed many open source programs, but my eyes were truly opened to the different options! Over the last 1-2 years, I've installed the played with dozens of free software that I've installed on my own computers. Some of those are used by family members. If you are interested in tech at all and have never heard of Docker, I highly recommend it! Also, look into the r/self-hosted subredit. There are tons of people there that can help and that also release their own software!
